Vung Tau Travel Guide

Vung Tau – 125km far from Ho Chi Minh city , is a popular destination for weekends from the city. It is the tourist and commercial center of Bà Rịa - Vũng Tàu (an industrial province in Southeastern Vietnam). The whole city area lies on a peninsula which is separated from the mainland by a gulf river called Co May river. Famous for romantic coastline roads, beautiful old lighthouse , special Statue of Jesus Christ with outstretched arms , great seafood together with fresh air makes it a very popular destination for both domestic and foreign tourists during summer time.

1. Get in?
From Hanoi, you can either take car transfer or flight transfer to Ho Chi Minh city and from there, get on a connecting vehicle to head for Vung Tau

From Ho Chi Minh city, there are many ways to transfer to Vung tau such as by car, by bus, motorbike or speedboat. You can choose some good local car company such as Mai Linh, Hoa Mai, Thien Phu, Rang Dong. Bus ticket is around 85.000 VND/ 1 person ( or 120.000 VND/ 1 person if departing from Tan Son Nhat airport ). You can take private car if your budget is higher

Tàu cánh ngầm" aka "Hydrofoil fast ferry" in Vietnam is a quick way to get to and from Vũng Tàu. Taking the Hydrofoil is a good way to see the commercial maritime areas as the boat runs through the Saigon River to the sea. After one hour and 15 minutes, Vũng Tàu peninsula appears with its two mountains (conveniently called "Big Mountain" and "Little Mountain") at the waterfront. This is a little more comfortable way to get to Vung Tau rather than taking the bus. It's a little more expensive at 250,000 VNĐ/person (US$13). On the weekends, be sure to get your tickets at least a day early. You will be lucky to get a ticket if you wait till the day of.

From Ho Chi Minh City, one needs two hours to reach Vung Tau by road (51A Expressway) or an hour and fifteen minutes by hydrofoil.

Vung Tau is rather small in size so don’t hesitate to take a walk or rent a bike, motorbike for getting around and enjoy the nice scenery. Motobike renting cost is 150.000 VND/ day

2. Accommodation :

For sea bathing convenient, you should choose hotels on main road such as Tran Phu street ( front beach) , Halong street ( Pineapple beach) or Thuy Van street ( Back beach ). Guesthouse renting rate is around 250-300.000 VND/ per night per room

3. Visiting :
Vung Tau is not too big but it is charming and gentle. Following on nearly 20km of beautiful coastal roads, you can reach famous sites of the city such as Jesus statue ( Tao Phung mountain ), Villa Blanche ( Tran Phu street ), Cloud lake ( Big mountain ), Linh Son pagoda, Giant reclining Buddha statue

Climbing up the top of the statue, contemplating the sea and city scenery , enjoy the wind breeze , is always a unforgettable experience for visitors.

Vũng Tàu Lighthouse is on top of Small Mountain and is one of the most famous lighthouse in Vietnam. First built in 1907 on the lower peak of Small Mount, it burned kerosene in its lamp. In 1911, it was rebuilt to 3 meters in diameter and 18 meters in height, and moved to the higher peak where it stands today. The Vũng Tàu Lighthouse projects light as far as 35 sea miles (64.75 km) and is equipped with telescopes to follow and direct ships at sea.
Next to the platform, 4 old French cannons (about 10m long and weighing several tons) were once used to defend the area from naval attacks.
The lighthouse affords a wonderful panoramic view of the whole of Vung Tau at day and at night with twinkling lights and is a really interesting site to visit.

To most tourists, however, Vung Tau is more interesting for its extensive beaches. Tourists often prefer swimming at Back Beach (Bai Sau) but sightseeing in Front Beach (Bai Truoc). Back Beach is well-known for its over 10 km of fine sand. Besides, Thuy Tien beach is also a very nice option for swimming.

Bai Truoc - Front Beach: Bai Truoc is also known as Bai Tam Duong. Tam Duong means "searching for the sun". The beach is located between Nui Lon mountain and Nui Nho mountain.

From afar, the beach is shaped like a crescent moon, and along the beach, there are many coconut trees. Not a clean beach for swimming, it has many kiosks, open-air restaurants and bars and it is the beach closest to urban Vung Tau.

Bai Sau - Rear Beach: Bai Sau is also known as Bai Thuy Van. This stretch of beach is located in the southeast side of town and is about 10 km in length from the base of Nui Nho. The most popular beach in Vung Tau, it is packed with Saigonese every weekend during the summer months.
The sea is calm during the rainy season but there are frequent periods of high winds and big waves during the dry season. Strong undertow currents make swimming dangerous in some spots.

Bai Dua - Pineapple Beach: Historically known for its wild pineapple trees and black rocks, Bai Dua is located at the foot of Nui Nho Mountain. It is the smallest of the four major beaches in Vung Tau but very popular for its calm waters and its majestic sunset.. Visitors come to this rocky cove for its tranquility and cleanliness.

It would be an great experience for ones who have a chance to contemplate sunrise or sunset in Vung Tau

Visiting Long Son, you can witness the way local make salt or fishing and raising

4. Eating and shopping:

Vung Tau is a sea city so it is absolutely famous for special and tasty seafood. You can try fresh and newly caught seafood such as cuttlefish, sea oyster, clams, Blood cockle etc… with reasonable rate from local fisherman on the beach or at Long Son fish market in the early morning . There are some good seafood restaurant namely as Ganh Hao, Oc Nam, Oc Noc etc…

Banh Khot is Vung Tau's signature meal, it is an all breakfast meal which includes greens and noodles. You can try Banh Khot at Banh Khot Vu Sua restaurant or Banh Khot Co Xuan restaurant

Wandering on the beach at night and drinking coffee on the beach are 2 must do activities that you should not miss when being in Vung Tau.

There are good coffee house in Vung Tau which are famous for wonderful seaview and good price namely as : Lan Rừng coffee, Ô Cấp coffee ( Hạ Long street), Sea Breeze coffee (Trần Phú street), Mũi Đá coffee (speedboat pier).
